Pennsylvania Humanities Council Presents: Nursing in a Civil War Hospital

This presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. The PHC inspires people to come together to share a life of learning. Since 1973, the PHC has provided resources that empower local groups to help their communities explore history, literature, the arts, and the ideas that shape the human experience.

You are invited to a Pennsylvania Humanities Council lecture on Wednesday, October 22 at 7:30pm in the Winsor Room. This lecture depicts life in field hospitals as seen through the eyes of Anna Morris Holstein, a nurse and a matron during the Civil War. Smadar Shtuhl uses Holstein’s viewpoint to demonstrate how gender and racial assumptions were compromised to answer the demands of a major conflict.
