From the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 to the 1963 March on Washington, then 50 years later in 2013, we marked the 50th anniversary of important milestones in the Civil Rights Movement.

If you want to know more about Frederick Douglass, then be sure to see this play. It is 35 minutes long, based on Douglass’ and Lincoln’s writings with a fictional character added. It is being offered through Beacon Theatre Productions which strives to produce plays of social significance to the community. Both plays were written by Georgina Bard and Richard Hadley.

Based on the writings of Mary Todd Lincoln, another one-act play, also 35 minutes long, will be presented, My Defense: Mary Todd Lincoln.

Following the performance, Judith Giesberg, PhD, author of  four books on the Civil War and Professor of History at Villanova University, will lead a brief discussion on the plays and these notable people.
