A Horatio Alger tale written in mashed potatoes and gravy

On Wednesday, November 3 at 7:30pm, author Stephen Fried will talk about his new book  Appetite For America…a book that happens to be one of the most popular books at Radnor Library because it is always out! Radnor Historical Society is the co-sponsor of this author event. Books will be available for purchase at the book signing, following the talk.

In his review of the book  Appetite For America, Jonathan Eig of the Wall Street Journal said that author Stephen Fried “gives Fred Harvey his due, making an  impressive case for the Horatio Alger tale, written in mashed potatoes and gravy”. ( It was a delicious review, too.)

Award-winning author Stephen Fried tells the story of British-born Fred Harvey, one of this country’s first self-made millionaires whose institutions were synonymous with the West for nearly a century. In Fried’s book,  Appetite For America: How Visionary Businessman Fred Harvey Built A Railroad Hospitality Empire That Civilized The Wild West (2010), the whole story is told…with all its majesty, dirty laundry, triumph and failure. This book is a hefty slice of American history you do not want to miss!
